Child Health Task Force Steering Committee Meeting Report, February 2023

The Child Health Task Force (TF) Secretariat organized its first Steering Committee (SC) meeting of the year on February 1–2, 2023 in Washington, DC at the JSI office. 

The overall aim of the meeting was to assess progress in implementing the TF’s five-year strategic plan and define future priorities to advance the child health agenda.

Global, regional, and national trends in under-5 mortality between 1990 and 2019 with scenario-based projections until 2030

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set in 2015 by the UN General Assembly, call for all countries to reach an under-5 mortality rate (U5MR) of at least as low as 25 deaths per 1000 livebirths and a neonatal mortality rate (NMR) of at least as low as 12 deaths per 1000 livebirths by 2030.

Mortality among children with acute illness in low-income and middle-income settings remains unacceptably high and the importance of post-discharge mortality is increasingly recognised. UN Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation Dashboard

The United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) was formed in 2004 to share data on child mortality, improve methods for child mortality estimation, report on progress towards child survival goals, and enhance country capacity to produce timely and properly assessed estimates of child mortality. The UN IGME is led by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and includes the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank Group and the United Nations Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs as full members.
