The 2nd Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia built on the momentum for action generated by the first Global Forum in Barcelona in 2020, and pivoted political attention from COVID-19 to the specific government actions needed to reduce child pneumonia deaths. These include full coverage of the pneumonia-fighting vaccines (e.g., PCV, pertussis, Hib, and measles), reductions in wasting, improvements in air quality, as well as rapid access to diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics and oxygen as part of strong primary health care systems.
The Child Health Task Force co-hosted the forum along with UNICEF, Every Breath Counts, Save the Children, Gavi, Unitaid, ISGlobal, USAID, PATH, and Clinton Health Access Initiative. The conference was funded by "la Caixa" Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The two-day forum was held in-person in Madrid, Spain on April 26 and 27, 2023.
At the conference, the Sierra Leone Minister of Health delivered a keynote address during the session on Africa's New Public Health Order to announce the launch of the Child Survival Action initiative. In addition, the anglophone panel discussion on National Child Survival Progress led by ministries of health in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Indonesia, was moderated by the Child Health Task Force.
