Institutionalizing integrated community case management (iCCM) to end preventable child deaths: A technical consultation and country action planning

July 22, 2019 - July 26, 2019
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

With the aim to institutionalize integrated community case management (iCCM) in the context of primary health care (PHC) and comprehensive child health programming, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) co-hosted a meeting from July 22-26, 2019 targeting countries in sub-Saharan Africa with high child mortality burden.

The meeting consisted of two connected parts: 1.“Institutionalizing iCCM to end preventable child deaths” and 2. “Implementation of Malaria High Burden High Impact approaches and iCCM to accelerate reduction of child mortality;” and brought together country delegations with government officials representing PHC, maternal and child health (MCH), and malaria programs as well as community systems from 14 African countries with high under-five mortality and high malaria burden. The meeting was also attended by a large number of technical experts and partners representing 17 technical and funding agencies. Over 60 staff members from WHO and UNICEF from headquarters, regional offices, and country offices participated in the meeting.

The meeting was a dedicated attempt to break down silos between national malaria control programs and MCH programs to address challenges to iCCM scale-up encountered by countries.
